This evening day trip can start as early as 3PM for maximum exploration, or as late as 5PM when days are long enough.

Agafay Evening Trip

Ourika valley is a very popular destination, which makes it the busiest destinations, both with tourists and locals. Just an hour outside Marrakech, its river and mountainous shield makes it the best escape for the scorching sun of Marrakech. You can take a hike to its waterfalls (there are 7 in total) but the higher ones are quite challenging to reach. Enjoy your lunch at the sides or even in the middle of the river as many restaurants have prepared tables and chairs in the water, some people enjoy soaking their feet in the water while eating for maximum cooling effect.

Ourika valley

Tin Mel Mosque is a mosque located in the High Atlas mountains of North Africa. It was built in 1156 to commemorate the founder of the Almohad dynasty, Mohamed Ibn Tumart. It is one of the two mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims, the other being the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Hitting the R203 road which leads to Taroudant through the Asni and Ouirgane way; we arrive at Tinmel, home to the Almohade Dynasty where we can still see pieces of the Medieval fortress, the royal necropolis shelters, the remains of the founder Abdel Moumen and the spiritual master Ibn Toumert. The mosque has been recently refurbished, and it is a model of the Almohade art. On the way back, we stop to Ouirgane, considered a gastronomic place where we have lunch. Afterwards, we continue our journey back to Marrakech

The building has a fortress-like exterior appearance with thick plain walls, which was characteristic of other Almohad mosques and buildings as wel.  It has a roughly quadrangular floor plan, measuring 43 by 40 metres.A more unusual feature was the position and form of the minaret, located at the middle of its southern wall on top of the mihrab; a design feature which is not found in other historic mosques.The minaret has a rectangular base and projects outwards from the surrounding outer wall, but has a truncated or unfinished appearance, contrasting with the bold and monumental minarets of other Almohad mosques that came after (such the minaret of the Kutubiyya in Marrakech or the Giralda in Seville).  The mosque has seven entrances: three on both its east and west sides and one central entrance to the north.

Exterior

Inside, the mosque has a typical hypostyle layout with an interior courtyard. The main prayer hall is divided into nine &ldquo;naves&rdquo; (running roughly north to south) by rows of pointed horseshoe arches. Another aisle, perpendicular to these rows of arches (running roughly east to west), runs along the southern wall (the qibla wall towards which worshippers prayed). The mosque is a notable example of the &ldquo;T-plan&rdquo; or &ldquo;T-type&rdquo; mosque which is found in earlier Almoravid architecture and was standard for later medieval Moroccan mosques: the aisle running parallel to the qibla wall and the middle nave leading to the mihrab, running perpendicular to that wall, are wider and more prominent than the other aisles of the mosque and thus draw a &ldquo;T&rdquo; shape in the floor plan of the building. The southern aisle of the qibla wall also features three muqarnas (&ldquo;honeycomb&rdquo; or &ldquo;stalactite&rdquo;) cupolas: one at the middle, in front of the mihrab, and one at either end, at the southern corners of the mosque. Each cupola is also flanked by &ldquo;lambrequin&rdquo; or &ldquo;muqarnas&rdquo; arches below, whose intrados are enhanced with carved sebka, muqarnas, and palmette/seashell motifs. Multifoil arches also run along the northern edge of this aisle, further setting it apart from the rest of the mosque. All these decorative flourishes also served to emphasize the southern aisle and middle nave in the T-plan of the mosque. The rectangular courtyard (sahn) of the mosque occupies a large part of its northern section, corresponding to the width of the mosque&#39;s five middle naves and the length of three aisles of arches. It is surrounded on all sides by the arches of the prayer hall and its extensions.

Interior

The mihrab (niche symbolizing the qibla), situated in the middle of the southern wall, is very similar in form and decoration to that of the Kutubiyya Mosque and other Almohad mosques, consisting of an octagonal alcove covered by a small muqarnas cupola. The wall surrounding the mihrab&#39;s opening is decorated with carved geometric and interlacing motifs. Unlike the Kutubiyya Mosque, the decorative capitals of the engaged columns around the mihrab are carved from stucco rather than marble. On either side of the mihrab are two tall arched openings: one led to a small chamber where the minbar (pulpit) was stored, while the other led to the imam&#39;s entrance at the eastern base of the minaret.

Ait benhadou and Telouet Kasbahs day trip takes you across the chain of the High Atlas mountains and over the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass, one of the most dramatic passes in Morocco (The government started a project to renovate a big part of the road after a tragic bus accident in 2012 and the work is still ongoing due to the harsh winter climate and geography). All along the road you can see Berber villages scattered along the side of the mountains, sometimes hard to distinguish from the mountainous entourage. As you reach the far side of the mountains, the landscape changes drastically, becoming semi-arid and desert-like as the chain of the Atlas mountains acts as a barrier separating the Mediterranean climate of the north from the Arid desert winds on the south-east. 
After the Tichka pass 2162m, we leave the main road and take a side road to the Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Pacha of the Atlas, the Glaoui, and stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country after the departure of the French armies. In the first kasbah you will visit only a few rooms that can be seen, as much of the kasbah has been closed off because of the falling ceilings and unsafe walls. However, the tiled walls, fluted pillars, beautifully painted wooden ceilings and colored glass windows of the reception rooms allow you to imagine what it was like in its prime.

Road to Telouet

From there you continue for lunch at Ait Ben Haddou along the newly asphalted road. Once in the village, you will get a closer look at the Kasbah&#39;s architecture with turrets on all the buildings, adorned with grilled windows and soft peach colored walls. These traditional houses are made of adobe, highly suitable for the climate conditions of the south and the summits of the mountains because it is an efficient temperature isolator and the building materials are abundant and require no transportation or significant transformation process.The afternoon is spent exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, This is the most famous of all Moroccan kasbahs, largely due to its appearance in many Hollywood blockbusters. It was one of the most important fortress strongholds on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought slaves, gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and beyond. Before leaving Ait Benhaddou, you will take one last glimpse of the village from a distant point offering a wonderful panoramic view, especially under clear blue skies.

Within just a short journey from Marrakech, this Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip is a refreshing change from the vibrant and busy red city. It is a great opportunity to see some lovely Moroccan countryside. And in the summer it is noticeably cooler and fresher. 
On this excursion to the Ouzoud Falls, you will have a long guided walk to explore the area, and go from the top of the waterfalls all the way to the base in beautiful tracks with vibrant green sides. You might encounter some funky macaque monkeys roaming around, since they live in the surrounding forests.

Ouzoud or Izid in some regions means &ldquo;the act of grinding grain&rdquo; in Berber. This seems to be confirmed by the frequent mills in the region, that were used to grind wheat for decades.

Your driver will pick you up from your accommodation at 08am and start your Marrakech day trip to the beautiful Ouzoud Waterfalls. The drive is about 2 hours and a half, with a possible 15 minutes stop to stretch and maybe have a coffee to fully wake up.

This day trip will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of the nature in Ouzoud Waterfalls. Take an adventurous hike through Olive groves to the source of the waterfall, take a swim and cool off at the base of the waterfalls.

getting there

Once arrived at Ouzoud village, we will leave the car at the parking, meet our local guide, and start the walking tour towards the waterfalls, at this point we are actually at the top of the waterfalls. You will descend through a beautiful and vibrant path, there are many small shops and restaurants scattered along the way, some of them have wonderful terrace views over the waterfalls, and you will have lunch in one of them.

The guide will take you all the way to the bottom of the waterfalls, there are many points where you can cross from one side of the valley to the other on small man made bridges. You can also try one of the small boats and spend some time on the water and take great perspective photos.

In Ouzoud

Yes you can, and it is a very enjoyable experience during hot summer days, so make sure to take your swimming clothes and towels.

You have many options for lunch in Ouzoud, you can choose between the different terraces, considering the view and the budget, as for the menus, they are quite similar. Some restaurants offer full menus, other offer meals &#39;&agrave; la carte&#39; which means you can pick individual dishes.

Ouzoud forests are also the home of the famous macaque monkeys, the naturally tail-less monkeys that you find performing in the main square in Marrakech. It is delightful to see them roaming free in their native habitat. Because Ouzoud is quite a touristic place, they got used to humans, so you might find one standing in your way without any fear.

If you intend to play with them, watch out for any loose things you are carrying (purse, sunglasses &hellip;etc.) because they like to snatch things and disapear lol.

Koutoubia mosque is one of the largest, most beautiful mosques in the western Muslim world. The tower is 69 m (221 ft) in height is a Hispano-Moresque masterpiece that is very similar to the Giralda of Seville, and has a lateral length of 12.8 m (41 ft). Six rooms (one above the other) constitute the interior; leading around them is a ramp by way of which the muezzin could ride up to the balcony. It is built in a traditional Almohad style and the tower is adorned with four copper globes.

Koutoubia mosque

El Bahia Palace is a beautiful building and an excellent example of Eastern Architecture from the 19th century that represents trends and standards of the wealthy who lived at that time. It was built for Ahmed Ibn Moussa (or Ba Ahmed) between 1894 and 1900 in the Alawi style that was popular at the time. For seven years, around a thousand craftsmen from the Fez region worked on the palace. The only sections open to the public are the apartments of the sultan&#39;s favorite concubine, the council chamber (with tiled walls and illuminated cedar wood ceiling) and the great central courtyard (paved with marble and decorated with zelliges and fountains).

El Bahia Palace

The Saadian Tombs: in Marrakech date back from the time of the sultan Ahmad al-Mansur (1578-1603). The tombs were only recently discovered (in 1917) and were restored by the Beaux-arts service. The tombs have, because of the beauty of their decoration, been a major attraction for visitors of Marrakech with their delicate decorations and pure architectural lines are considered by many to be a beautiful feat of architecture. They were first built to house the tombs of the Saadian Sultan, Ahmed el Mansour. In 1591 the first &quot;koubba&quot; of this burial ground was built south of the Kasbahs.

Menara Gardens: Covering an area of 250 acres, they are full of olive trees surrounding a large central lake that dates back from the 12th century and is fed by a network of irrigation channels. At the water&#39;s edge is a small Saadian pavilion. With the snow covered peaks behind it, this is a breathtaking sight in the evening when it catches the golden rays of the setting sun.

Menara Gardens

The Majorelle Garden is filled with colorful walkways, ponds, cactus and plants as well as a beautiful shop with hand-made goods. The Majorelle Gardens are a lush, garden estate designed by Jacques Majorelle and maintained by Yves Saint Laurent. The Majorelle Garden, previously the Jardin Bou Saf, bears its name from its original creator, Jacques Majorelle, the French expatriate artist who was born in Nance, France in 1886.

A traditional meeting place for peasants and merchants from the Sous region, the High atlas and the South has become the heart of Marrakech. In the mornings this large square is crowded with fruit and spice sellers, guerrab with their leather water bottles and metal drinking cups, basket sellers, ironmongers and Barbers. In the afternoons come the Gnaoua dancers descended from former Guinean slaves, musicians, story tellers, snake charmers and entertainers with performing monkeys!

Start our Plateau kik day trip from Marrakech with 4x4 vehicle drive towards the Dam of Lalla Takkerkoust on the Nfis River, a beautiful panorama on the Atlas mountain range. We will join the track road, passing through several Berber villages, situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. 
We continue to the plateau of Kik, a very beautiful panorama having the lake like center. Plain dominated by massive water-bed of the dame and by the chain of the High Atlas (tops with more than 4000 meters). After this, we stop at the holy village &ldquo;Saint Moulay Brahim&rdquo; (there is an annual holy ceremony that is held in July). Now, we arrive to the beautiful spot of Asni Ouirgane, with a splendid sight of Mont Toubkal, covered with snow during winter and in spring. 
Leaving Asni, we will follow the road of Tizi n&rsquo;Test, in the direction of Marrakech, passing by Moulay Brahim Gorges. At Tahanaoute, there is a small road to join quickly the valley of Ourika where your lunch is reserved in a good restaurant. 
Afternoon transfer, return trip to your hotel in Marrakech.

Takerkoust and Plateu Kik day trip will give you the chance to see the rural side of Morocco, Authentic Berber villages and atlas mountains

The three valleys

Atlas mountains and Imlil day trip is one of the most spectacular day trips from Marrakech if you desire to get out of the city and delve in the authentic and rural side of Morocco. We will start our day trip to Imlil at 09am from Marrakech by a 4WD or minivan. We will head south, gaining altitude towards Tahnaout and Moulay Brahim Gorges. Furthermore, we will cross the Berber village of Asni, very popular for its weekly market every Saturday, which we can stop to visit if you happen to take this trip on a Saturday. We will then continue our route towards Imlil in a narrow paved road twirling in the middle of the trees, small water sources and perched houses. Once In Imlil, we will meet our local guide and the muleteers, after the introductions, you will be assisted to hope on the mules, settle in to enjoy a wonderful hike throughout the hills, fields and rocky pathways. The local house where you will have lunch is situated in Aroumd village (1900 m above sea level), with beautiful views and scenery from its terrace.

In warm days, you can enjoy your tea and lunch on the terrace to fully appreciate the vibrant scenery, in colder days, there is a dining saloon that is kept warm.

One might ask, what&#39;s the difference between Ourika valley and Imlil day trip, and it is a good question, so here is your answer: Ourika is a very touristic attraction among travel agencies, foreigners accustomed to Morocco, and locals, you would struggle to find a parking spot in Ourika during hot days and maybe wait in line at each difficult hike or restaurant. In contrast, Imlil is a less touristic attraction and is usually the destination for professional mountain hikers who take Imlil as a starting point for longer hikes of the mighty Toubkal mountain. In addition to the less touristic aspect, the mule ride and the traditional house lunch, makes Imlil a special experience that can never be matched by Ourika.

However, to be fair to Ourika valley, if you prefer to do a quick hike then sit on the riverside with your feet close or even in the water, and you don&#39;t mind eating restaurant food, then yes, Ourika can be a good alternative

Why choose Imlil over Ourika?

If you are feeling the desire to challenge yourself a little, you can. Instead of mules, we can arrange for an English-speaking guide that can walk you up to Aroumd village, the hike takes 1h30 to 2h depending on your pace. And it is breathtaking, both literally and figuratively, because nothing matches walking to fully immerse yourself in the surrounding nature.

PS : The choice of doing a hike on foot should be communicated during the booking because it needs a different arrangement (Guide instead of mules).

Feeling fit and would like a challenge ?

We are aware that many clients are not able or prefer not to ride the mules (Health, Age, or other personal reasons). And therefore we offer alternatives, Just let us know in advance, so we can provide a 4x4 Toyota Land-cruiser for your tour, it can reach Aroumd village via a somewhat difficult path that is not reachable by minivans.

So whether you prefer not ride the mules, or opt for a one way hike on foot with the guide and want to travel the distance by car, it is doable. All you have to do is share your requirements and we will be more than delighted to accommodate.

Can't ride the mules / Hike on foot only one way ?

Imlil and Atlas Mountains

If you only have 2 or 3 days in Morocco, you&#39;d probably prefer to spend sometime in Marrakech and its surroundings instead of traveling long distances over multiple days to see the Sahara desert. If that is the case, Agafay desert would be the best alternative to get a glimpse of the desert.

Just 1h30 drive from Marrakech, the barren plateaus and hills of Agafay start, and off the beaten track we go. An arid landscape with a few green oases here and there for contrast and snow caped mighty mountains in the horizon. It is indeed a beautiful sight.

For mechanical sports lovers, Agafay Desert is a playground for quad bikers and buggy enthusiasts, the immense plateaus and the multitude of paths offer great opportunities for some machine rumbling and Adrenaline unleashing.

You can also try a 30 minutes camel ride if you&#39;ve never experienced riding these beautiful, peaceful animals.

Agafay is a great backdrop for photos, so no wonder many ceremonies and action clips are taken there, many celebrities even held their weddings in one of the camps of Agafay. So make sure to bring your best camera along and take some unforgettable shots.

Shorter version ?

A few hours into the day, small patches of green will start to show and not long after you will be back on the tarmac road side-lined by the old eucalyptus trees. You will arrive to the edge of the Lalla Takerkoust lake built as a dam providing Marrakech its electricity. Through small hills along the dam you will get to Nfis valley crossing Berber villages and arriving to a Berber family house for a visit and homemade lunch. After lunch, you can opt for 2 hours hike with a member of the house familiy ( not included in the price ) and climb for an hour to visit one of the oldest villages in the foothill of the biggest forest of the Atlas Mountains.

The beach of Essaouira is a long ribbon of around ten kilometers, usually full of surfers taking advantage of the constant windy weather. During summer long days, it is also possible to go to the nearby beach of Sidi Kaouki ( about 11 km from Essaouira ) to appreciate a wilder view of the beach and ocean. Sipping a cup of coffee at one of the caf&eacute; terraces is pure delight.
